There’s a big argument being used right now to justify weakening New York’s climate law: That it’s driving up energy costs. But that argument doesn’t hold up. The law hasn’t even been fully implemented yet. Meanwhile, energy prices are already high under the current fossil fuel system. Nearly half of New York’s electricity comes from gas—and gas prices are one of the biggest reasons your bill fluctuates. So rolling back clean energy goals doesn’t solve the problem—it keeps us dependent on the exact system that’s causing it. And it delays the transition to cleaner, more affordable alternatives like solar and battery storage. We’ve already seen the cost of climate disasters—Hurricane Sandy alone caused $19 billion in damage. We can’t afford to keep kicking this down the road.
