Honestly I found the throne of glass series got worse. At the start she was just Celaena, she was just a cool, clever assassin. But then sjm turned around and made her the lost princess and the chosen one and everyone loved her

It's exactly like you said. She writes the same bland characters over and over and to me, it feels like she doesn't plan her storyline and writes as she goes along. So, very problematic content with plot holes and ends up reading like a poorly written fanfiction. It feels like no one is editing her work.

I think you have to be very talented to write a good story in first person. I definitely agree, she’s good at creating new and interesting worlds but her characters are boring and suffer from kickass Mary Sue syndrome imo. Great review, looking forward to watching more of your content.

I am actually a big SJM fan and I've read all except catwoman. But looking at your review I can honestly see the issues you saw with them. I am trying to write a fictional novel and the issues your talking about are my biggest fear, making characters that are overused or using overused topics.

I don't mind if people enjoy the books.

FINALLY i understand why i just couldn't fully get into the story. The Mary Sue heroine really puts me off without me knowing it.

Interesting... Sounds like SJM writes for the Mary Sue market... Some people love her books! I've never read her. Having said that, I enjoyed Good Omens, but I expected to really love it. It was just okay. Sometimes books just aren't right for you.

I mean there is a reason fanfic is so popular in the first place I cant say I'd recommend her work seriously but the world building is nice and the characters are predictable so it's just a nice bland read to get you out of life. My main issue is how her plots dont make sense, just kinda run a course and then stuff just works out? Secondary issue is how it's obvious when shes never done any of the hobbies her characters have (the way she describes painting is a big lmaooo). Just read that new book in the court series and boy was that odious, felt like fanfic of her own work which is saying something she made a house like smut????

I’ve read all her books and although I don’t hate them I definitely agree that it is the same story and same characters. In general the plot at times was also such a drag to get through because it felt repetitive and really dragged out. I thought her most recent book ACOSF might be different because of the dislike that we had built up for the character however it very quickly turned to the same ‘Katniss’ character. I do love the worlds she creates and think they have so much potential but with the plot it doesn’t work out; we either do anything for 200 pages or everything happens in 6 pages.

I wanted to start reading after being curious of the books she wrote for sometime, but I struggled to feel the urge to continue reading after reading the first pages, and for me first page determined whether I find interesting enough to continue.

sarah j maas is the type of writer that requires people who will follow the story through the end. it's why i love her but i totally get where your coming from.

"Katniss" oh gosh! I enjoy her books. I'm on book 3 of throne of Glass. Throne of Glass wasn't good. I was like "why people like this?" Then I read the second book and I'm like "ohh, that's why" but I get why people don't like her work.

I’ve just started her ACOTAR series and you pretty much nailed how I feel.

I hated and loved the series and still, can’t stop listening. Middle aged woman and loved the corny stuff, or the smutty stuff.
