PAUL McCARTNEY Tour: Driving World Tour // Leg 1: North America (Driving USA Tour) Venue: Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena City: Oakland, California, USA Date: April 1st, 2002 This is the first show of the Driving USA Tour, Paul's first tour of the 21st century and the start of his current era of touring. This is the first full-length show played by his new touring band, as Paul's 2002 Super Bowl appearance was only one song ('Freedom'), and boy, do they deliver! A great audience recording captures the complete show, as well as snippets of pro footage captured by Reuters. Despite being the first show of the tour promoting 'Driving Rain', no new tracks from the album get their debut performances tonight, with Paul sticking with the four songs he's already done live prior to the tour. Paul is in great shape tonight, embellishing and delivering songs with more joy and passion than we've heard in years, even managing to out-sing his early 90s self a couple times. While there are a couple of rougher performances here and there (he struggles with 'Freedom', for example, these sorts of vocal issues are expected for the first night of a tour as he's still getting used to the set), there are still plenty of highlights from him tonight, including a fantastic 'Jet', a superb 'Coming Up', a great 'Let Me Roll It', and a pretty strong 'Driving Rain', 'C Moon' is a really fun performance with a very ad-libby Paul, and 'Let It Be' is a really great performance with some really gutsy note attempts. The outro to 'Hey Jude' is also fantastic, with some great ad-libs and piano work from the frontman. The ever-so-consistent Wix is fantastic, with lots of great things during 'Coming Up', and a great solo during 'Let Me Roll It'. Abe's drumming is an absolute highlight, and it's just a joy to hear him tearing through each song with great precision and energy, also delivering great harmonies throughout. There's great moments of musicianship present throughout, with some of them being 'Coming Up', 'C Moon', 'Freedom', 'Let It Be', and 'The End' (excellent guitar work on the latter three, by the way). It was music critic Jon Landau who wrote in the May 22, 1974 issue of The Real Paper, "I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen. And on a night when I needed to feel young, he made me feel like I was hearing music for the very first time." Landau had just seen Bruce perform live at the Harvard Square Theater and subsequently would become his manager and producer beginning with the album "Born to Run."
