Description
Boasting a blend of classic hip-hop vibes with a smooth, new-era delivery, the world of STREET LIGHT is unique and immersive. Widely acclaimed for his lyrical prowess and versatility -- something he attributes to his upbringing in Detroit, MI, his wordplay nearly demands a double-take. The message, however, is clear: he is the voice of the people.

Drawing early comparisons to Midwestern legends Lupe Fiasco, Eminem, and Royce Da 5'9, STREET LIGHT has quickly developed a vocal distinction and musicality all his own. A storyteller at heart, his catalog is colored with expansive worlds, contrasting ideologies, progressive instrumentation and structures. This adaptive approach allows him to capture the essence of the soundscape and create a unique listening experience all while weaving in and out of different scenarios with multiple flows interlacing a single verse at a time.

With an extensive catalog, hundreds of performances, millions of listens, downloads, views, and multiple awards

STREET LIGHT Let’s discuss my absence. Life is bigger than music. A few years ago, I was driving this vehicle when I swerved off the freeway at 70 MPH to avoid killing an inebriated pedestrian. You can’t imagine what that impact was like, but the impact, the airbag, the glass, the smoke, the confusion, the sirens, etc.. A couple years ago, I couldn’t look at this image. Long story short, I was physically fine, but was immediately sent to a psychiatrist and diagnosed with PTSD and OCD. I developed a severe aversion to being in and around vehicles, as well as an intolerance for abrupt noises, conversations lasting more than 2 minutes, things being unpredictable or out of place, or anything physically touching me (see my song CRASH). The constant flashbacks interrupted anything I tried to focus on, always telling me that something could happen at any moment— this is called the “trauma vortex” that disguises reality. I was prescribed several medications that I cycled through including, but not limited to, Zoloft, Adderall, and Prozac. They allowed me to lessen some of those extreme feelings, but they made me feel like a shell of myself (see my song s.w.i.m.). Not only did I lose my ability to create the same way, I damaged 75% of my personal and professional relationships in the process of isolation or the understandable ignorance we all shared during that time. IT IS WHY I HAVE STAYED OFF SOCIAL MEDIA AND NOT RELEASED A LOT OF MUSIC. There’s your answer. Not only have I had to relearn how to write, I had to repair various aspects of my thought process, which was the toughest thing I’ve ever had to do. I hated everything I wrote, every beat I heard, even recording was a joyless process. I took my medication off and on for 2+ years, and tried various different methods to regain my sense of self back. I worked with several psychiatrists, to no avail, and eventually sought out a holistic practice in 2018. It has been a VERY difficult time. The details of everything can’t fit into a post, but this year, I told myself this was it. I have worked very hard to hack the mind through discipline, repetition, meditation and holistic healing, while reducing my medication to zero as of this July. Again, this has not been easy. I nearly gave up many times, my prescriptions right there waiting for me. However, something strange happened last month, and I was listening back to something I had just recorded. It was the first time anything I’ve made over the last few years sounding like VINTAGE “me”. I didn’t tell anyone, but I locked myself in my room all of August and just wrote and recorded, 16 hours a day. I felt something clicking like it hasn’t in a long time, a power, of you will. I checked my calendar to make sure it wasn’t 2014... that’s not a joke. I finally called the same doctor that diagnosed me, and after multiple thorough mental evaluations, he confirmed what I already knew in my heart: I’M FREE. Doctors don’t usually use the word “cured” in this instance, but he made an exception. I’m having a surreal moment, and it’s hard to explain what it feels like to be “back”, or what it was like to be “gone” for so long, but I did my best to explain it through music. Most of all, I’m grateful to friends, family, and you all. Thank you for helping me through a battle you may not even have known I was fighting. Maybe one day I’ll tell more of this story, but for now I have the biggest chip on my shoulder about the years that I felt were stolen from me. We’re about to do something no one has ever seen. New music tomorrow. Right here. - STREET LIGHT (6 years ago (edited))
